Just for comparison sake I created a tracking session with 16 tracks and loaded up the channels with 14 bx_SSL-E channels strips, an Ampeg SVT and 2 bx_Rockracks with DSP to spare. Since the Carbon connects through Ethernet I have the added value of using the Apollo DSP's for some UAD plug-ins on mix down. I assume Luna and Apollo would work similarly but I really don't want to switch DAW's. The total integration with Protools and Carbon is stellar!! I have enough DSP Plug-ins in most of my sessions since I go back and forth between an HDX rig and this native rig. I don't even use Console because I hate the workflow.

For full disclosure I have stopped using most UAD plug-ins for quite some time now and was only using the Apollo8 as an interface to Protools. Just finished installing my Avid Carbon in to my studio, for know its sitting right underneath an Apollo8(Thunderbolt 2). But for now I am pretty happy with the Carbon and its workflow. Maybe I will end up buying a Octo DSP Accelerator to replace the Apollo and still use some of the plug-ins I payed a lot of money for. It was a reminder of why I stopped using UAD plug-ins. And obviously I couldn't track with the UAD plugins because of massive latency. The Apollo8 Quad choked at 9 SSL-Channels. I then replicated the Plug-ins with UAD versions (SSL-EChannel,Ampeg SVT and Marshal Plexi). Remember that as soon as I take the tracks out of record they would switch back to native processing.
I am wondering if anybody else on here has made this type of switch yet!? I will probably end up keeping the X8p to run Logic/Ableton.

Sometimes when I have that many live inputs I switch to using an old Protools HD system just so I can track latency free with headphone mixes and not have to deal with buffer settings. The x8p only gives me 16 inputs (8 analog,8 ADAT) but I have been able to work around it with overdubs. I track mostly live bands with about 16-24 mics at a time (Drums/Bass/guitars/vocals). I have a Carbon on order and will be comparing it to the ApolloX8p we have in the studio. Luna seems the be the right step for that but means switching DAW's. I have yet to see a UAD system that is able to do a full mix with all UAD-Plug-ins. For tracking they are unusable due to massive latency. Using UAD plug-ins natively without Console in Protools only works when mixing. Its like having a Mackie mixer bolted on to an SSL just to run a couple of nice pieces of outboard gear. I own several Apollo/Twin/Accelerators from UAD and always hated the workflow.I Never use Console as it just adds another layer to the mixer. I think Carbon does everything UAD Apollo promised with Luna without having to switch DAW's. I personally have been waiting for ever for a product with tight Protools integration. Inability to use UAD plugins in low latency Poor selection of quality AAX DSP plugins What appears to be fantastic PT integration
